Hello y’all my name is Eric Johnson a Hall Director for the University of North Texas, an avid gamer, and one of the folks trying to get GeekonRecord up and running. I have been getting a lot of questions about an event we are putting on in early November can Mario Takes Over Denton 2: Bowser’s Revenge. So I figured I would take a little time to explain what it’s all about.
Essentially what we are doing is a Mario Brothers Team Marathon to help sick kids at Cooks Children’s Hospital. Last year we put on this program in Honors Hall and were able to raise a good portion of money but this year our goal is to spread the impact to all the Hall’s on campus. I truly believe that with us united we can make a difference in our community and what better way for us to make a difference than doing it with something that we love games.
Physical Game Play::
This year there will be two ways to play. The first is to form a team of four or more players and attempt to beat as many levels as you can on almost all of the Super Mario Brother’s games. The winning team will get a prize of glory and Honor. Each person on the team has to play a certain amount of hours for the games to count. This part of the Marathon will be taking place in Honors Hall starting at 8:00am on Saturday November 2nd.
The second way to play is to not be affiliated with Mario part of the marathon but in the gaming of your choice. We will be creating a simple UNT Team for anyone that wants to raise funds on their own for Cook’s Children Hospital. We will have a couple of TV’s dedicated at Honors hall not participating in Mario but in the fundraiser that can participate but you will also be willing to play in your room or maybe do something in your hall specifically. One really cool way that Extra life has opened this up is by adding the component of Table Top playing for charity also. So during the Marathon you can also raise money by playing board games. So bring your games over to Honors and Play the day away.
All fundraising will be going through the Extra Life system for fund raising. I encourage you to start seeking sponsors now. Ask your friends, ask your family. Remember that time your mom told you video games will never make a difference well now you can tell her they are. All you have to do is either create a team if you are participating in the Mario Marathon and sign up at your halls front desk. The next thing is for everyone participating to create a personal fundraising page. If you are not a part of a specific team just join the UNT Team. Then start telling people what you are doing. Blast it on your Facebook or Twitter. Email your family or friends. Then finally follow up on your promise to game and play on November 2nd.
This year, when you sign up to play video games for 25 hours on Nov. 2, 2013, you won’t just be raising money for kids. You’ll be supporting LOCAL kids and their families. Kids right in your own backyard.
All the money you raise for Extra Life 2013 will go directly to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital of your choice.
Do you want to have more fun than you can handle while helping some of the bravest (and smallest) warriors in your community? All you have to do is:
- Create a team and sign up at a residence hall front desk
- Register and create your personal fundraising page.
- Try to get friends or family members to sponsor you at $1 per hour ($25 each) or more.
- Sit on your rear end and play all types of games for 25 hours straight on Saturday, November 2nd, beginning at 8 a.m.
